Preface

Preface

Why this handbook?

Building a startup is hard. Yet it also is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your life. There is no one right or bad way to go about it. But there are many things that can increase your odds of success.

I’ve created this handbook not only to share common advice, but also to share experiences and insights from my journey and the journey of peers at YCombinator. I do not view it as a definitive guide, but rather as a collection of thoughts and ideas that can inspire, challenge, and help you on your own journey.

Who is this handbook for?

Whether you are curious, starting out, or already running a startup, this handbook may bring a new perspective or help you to reflect on your own experiences. It does not provide blanket advice, but may nourish your thoughts and ideas on what to do next, or what to do differently.

What to do with this handbook?

This is a living document, a work in progress, and a companion for your journey. As I continue to learn and grow, I will update it with new insights and experiences.

You might find certain sections resonate more than others, some seem like common advice, or totally wrong. Take what’s relevant, adapt it to your situation, and feel free to leave the rest.

If you ever feel stuck or unsure what to do next, come back to this handbook. Use it as a lens to reflect on your challenges and as a source of inspiration. Ultimately, the best advice is the one you develop yourself, and my hope is that this guide helps you get there.
